This annual check-up is enshrined in Swiss law and applies to all school-age children from their first year of nursery school until the end of compulsory schooling. It takes place once a year and is carried out by registered school dentists — we are officially recognised in Zug and are happy to treat children from the city area.
It is important to understand that the school dental check-up is an examination and consultation — not a treatment. We assess the condition of the teeth, provide advice on prevention and inform parents of the findings. As part of this check-up, we systematically examine your child’s entire mouth. We check for tooth decay and early signs of damage, which can be treated very easily and gently at an early stage. In addition, we assess the gums and identify early signs of inflammation or unhealthy habits.

Misalignments detected early on can usually be corrected much more easily and cost-effectively than those treated only in adulthood. The costs of the annual check-up are covered in full by the local authority. The check-up itself does not incur any costs for parents. If the check-up reveals a need for treatment — such as tooth decay or misalignment — the treatment costs must be borne by the parents themselves, unless local regulations stipulate otherwise.
Children’s teeth are more susceptible to tooth decay than adults’ teeth because the enamel has not yet fully mineralised. Tooth decay detected early can be treated with a small filling — if you wait too long, it may require more extensive treatment, possibly even extraction. We’ll give your child a warm welcome. We carry out a systematic examination of their teeth, checking for tooth decay, gum health, tooth alignment and oral hygiene. The consultation is calm and child-friendly — we explain everything in simple, easy-to-understand language. The check-up usually takes 15–20 minutes. Afterwards, parents receive a written report on the findings and, if necessary, specific treatment recommendations.
If tooth decay or any other abnormality is detected during the annual check-up, we will inform the parents immediately. The treatment itself is not covered by the statutory school dental care scheme — it is arranged separately and paid for by the parents, unless supplementary insurance applies. In this case, we recommend booking a treatment appointment as soon as possible to protect your child’s teeth.
Many children feel nervous about their first visit to the dentist — this is completely normal. We are experienced in working with children and take the time to make your child feel at ease. It helps to frame the conversation positively beforehand: ‘The dentist will check whether your teeth are strong and healthy.’ Avoid phrases that might cause anxiety.
