Dental anxiety — more common than you might think

Many people experience a natural apprehension about visiting the dentist. For at least one in ten patients, however, dental anxiety reaches such a level that it leads to genuine avoidance behaviour: appointments are repeatedly postponed, pain is ignored, and treatment is delayed for years. What begins as anxiety can thus develop into a genuine dental phobia — with serious consequences for dental health.

If you recognise yourself in this pattern, you’ve come to the right place. As dentists specialising in treating anxious patients in Zug, we’ll meet you without pressure or judgement — openly, patiently and with a clear plan for how we can work together to find the path to better dental health.

What triggers dental anxiety?

The causes of dental phobia are varied. Often, a bad experience from the past lies behind it — a painful procedure, a rushed approach or the feeling of having had no control over the situation. Feelings of shame about the condition of one’s own teeth can also contribute to avoiding a visit to the dentist.

Important: We fully understand each of these reasons. We do not judge anyone, and we always start treatment at a point where you feel comfortable.

Our options for anxious patients

Depending on the severity of your dental phobia, we have various methods at our disposal to make your treatment as comfortable as possible:

Nitrous oxide sedation

Nitrous oxide (N₂O) is administered via a small nasal mask and has a rapid relaxing and anxiety-relieving effect. You remain awake and responsive, but feel significantly calmer and more detached from the treatment. After a short time, you can leave the surgery unaided.

Sedation (twilight sleep)

With sedation, you are given a tranquilliser that puts you into a pleasant state of twilight sleep. Although you remain conscious, you are barely aware of the treatment and usually have little or no memory of it afterwards.

General anaesthesia at the dentist

For patients with severe dental phobia or in cases of very extensive treatment, dental treatment under general anaesthesia may be the best solution. You will sleep deeply and soundly — and wake up once everything is finished.

Our promise: We’ll explain every step to you before we carry it out. You can ask for a break at any time — we’ll stop as soon as you give the signal. Your safety and well-being always come first.

Frequently asked questions about dental anxiety

No — dental phobia is very common and medically recognised. It’s estimated that one in ten people suffer from it to an extent that affects their daily lives. We won’t judge you — we understand, and we’re here to help.
At your first appointment, we won’t do anything you’re not ready for. We’ll start by having a detailed conversation: what triggers your fear? What have you experienced so far? What do you need to feel safe? Only then will we plan the next step together.
That depends on the severity of your anxiety, the planned procedure and your general state of health. Nitrous oxide is well suited to mild to moderate anxiety and shorter treatments. Sedation is ideal for medium-sized procedures. General anaesthesia is used in cases of severe dental phobia or very extensive procedures. We’ll decide this together with you.
Yes — we’ll agree on a hand signal in advance, which you can use at any time to let us know to stop. This is standard practice for us when treating anxious patients. We never pressure anyone into anything.
In Switzerland, basic health insurance does not usually cover dental treatment. The costs of sedation or anaesthesia as an additional service are also generally not reimbursed. We’ll provide you with transparent information in advance about all the costs involved.
No — it’s never too late. We have treated many patients who haven’t been to the dentist for years. No judgement, no recriminations. We’ll look together at what’s possible and start where you feel ready.
