What is CEREC?

CEREC stands for ‘Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics’ — in other words, ceramic restorations produced directly at the dentist’s chair. The system utilises CAD/CAM technology (Computer-Aided Design / Computer-Aided Manufacturing): the tooth is digitally scanned, the restoration is designed on the computer and then automatically milled from a ceramic block.

The result is a precisely fitted, lifelike ceramic restoration — with the same quality as a laboratory-made restoration, but in a fraction of the time.

How does the CEREC process work?

Step 1

Digital scan

Instead of taking a conventional impression, we scan the prepared tooth and the surrounding teeth using a high-precision 3D camera. The scan takes just a few minutes and is completely comfortable.

Step 2

CAD design

The restoration is designed on the computer based on the 3D scan and the bite position. The software suggests a shape, which we, as dentists, customise individually.

Step 3

Milling

The finished restoration is milled fully automatically from a high-quality ceramic block — with precision down to the millimetre.

Step 4

Fitting

Following a final check and any necessary polishing, the restoration is permanently fitted using a special dental adhesive. No temporary restoration, no second appointment.

Frequently asked questions about CEREC 3D

With CEREC, everything is completed in a single session — no temporary restoration, no second appointment, and no 1–2-week wait for laboratory work. The quality is comparable to that of laboratory work.
Yes — digital scans are more precise than conventional impressions. This reduces fitting inaccuracies and results in a better marginal fit for the restoration.
For anyone who doesn’t want to attend two appointments, can’t tolerate impressions (e.g. severe gag reflex) or wants a good result quickly. It’s also very well suited for replacing old amalgam fillings.
Depending on the restoration, approximately 1.5–2.5 hours for the entire procedure in a single appointment — including preparation, scanning, milling and placement.
Yes — CEREC ceramics (e.g. Vita Enamic or IPS e.max) are high-quality dental ceramics and are comparable to laboratory-fabricated restorations in terms of durability and aesthetics.
The cost is similar to that of a laboratory-made restoration — sometimes slightly cheaper due to the elimination of laboratory costs, sometimes comparable. We’ll provide you with transparent information in advance. Above all, CEREC saves you time and a second appointment.
