Periodontitis treatment in Zug —
treating gum inflammation.

Periodontitis is the most common cause of tooth loss in adulthood — and usually begins without you even realising it. As your dentist in Zug, we detect it at an early stage and treat it specifically before the supporting structures of the teeth suffer irreversible damage.

What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis — often referred to colloquially as ‘periodontal disease’ — is an inflammation of the periodontium (the structures supporting the teeth). The periodontium comprises all the structures that anchor the tooth in the jawbone: the gums, the jawbone itself, the tooth root and the cementum surrounding the root.

If the condition is left untreated, the inflammation spreads deeper and deeper — the bone breaks down, the tooth becomes loose and eventually falls out. The progression of the condition is insidious: it is often painless, which is why periodontitis is frequently only detected at an advanced stage.

How does periodontitis develop?

It is triggered by bacteria in dental plaque. If plaque is not consistently removed, it hardens into tartar and forms gum pockets. Harmful bacteria can multiply in these pockets, attacking the gums and the underlying bone. Risk factors include poor oral hygiene, smoking, diabetes and genetic predisposition.

Symptoms — look out for these signs

Many of these signs only become apparent when the condition is already advanced. That is why regular dental check-ups are so important — they allow us to spot any problems at an early stage.

Periodontitis and general health

Periodontitis is not purely a dental condition. Scientific studies show links to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke and premature births. Treating periodontitis can therefore have a positive effect on general health.

How do we treat periodontitis?

Treatment depends on the severity of the condition:

Important: Periodontitis is not curable, but it responds very well to treatment. With consistent treatment and regular follow-up care, its progression can be halted and tooth preservation ensured in the long term.

Frequently asked questions about periodontitis

Gingivitis is a superficial inflammation of the gums, limited to the gum tissue, and is often reversible with good oral hygiene. Periodontitis goes deeper — it also affects the jawbone and the periodontium, and whilst it cannot be completely cured, it can be managed.
Not completely — but it can be treated very effectively. With consistent treatment and regular follow-up care, its progression can be halted. Bone that has already been destroyed does not regenerate spontaneously, but further loss can be prevented.
Bleeding gums, reddened or receding gums, exposed tooth necks, gum pockets, bad breath and loose teeth. However, many cases remain symptom-free for a long time — which is why regular check-ups are so important.
First, an assessment is carried out (measuring pocket depths), followed by professional deep cleaning (scaling/root planing) under local anaesthetic. This is followed by regular check-ups for aftercare. In severe cases, additional measures may be necessary.
The bacteria that cause it can be transmitted through close contact (kissing, sharing cutlery). However, this does not mean that any amount of transmitted bacteria automatically leads to the disease — risk factors such as oral hygiene and immune status play a major role.
In Switzerland, basic health insurance does not usually cover dental treatment. Severe periodontitis with a proven impact on general health may justify exceptions. We will provide you with transparent information in advance.
