Dental crown — when a tooth is severely damaged

A dental crown (also known as a cap) is an artificial covering that is placed over the remaining tooth stump. It is used when the natural tooth is so severely damaged — due to tooth decay, a crack or a fracture — that a filling or an inlay is no longer sufficient, but the tooth stump can still be preserved.

In some cases, the remaining tooth stump is so short that the crown alone cannot find sufficient support. In such cases, we insert a post (titanium or fibreglass) into the root canal to anchor the crown — this requires prior root canal treatment.

Dental bridge — when a tooth is missing

A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. It is anchored to the adjacent teeth (abutment teeth), which must be ground down for this purpose. A bridge is fixed in place — it cannot be removed.

Nowadays, in suitable cases, we prefer dental implants to bridges, as this avoids the need to grind down healthy neighbouring teeth. We will assess on a case-by-case basis which solution is best for you.

Materials

The crown restoration process

The tooth is carefully prepared, an impression or digital scan is taken and sent to the laboratory. In the meantime, you will be fitted with a temporary crown. After approximately 1–2 weeks, the finished crown is fitted and permanently cemented in place.

Frequently asked questions about crowns & bridges

A crown is placed over a tooth that is still present but severely damaged. A bridge replaces a tooth that is completely missing and is supported by the neighbouring teeth. Both are fixed in place.
With good care and regular check-ups, 10–20 years or longer. The lifespan depends on the material, the tooth’s position in the mouth and your oral hygiene.
No — the tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic. The treatment is painless. Once the anaesthetic has worn off, the tooth may be temporarily sensitive.
An implant has the advantage that no neighbouring teeth need to be ground down. If the tooth to be replaced is still present (even if severely damaged), a crown is the more sensible solution. If a tooth is missing, we recommend an implant in suitable cases.
Just like natural teeth: brush twice a day, and use dental floss or interdental brushes for the margins and bridge elements. Regular professional cleaning is important to ensure that the margins stay clean and that no tooth decay develops.
The cost depends on the material and the method of fabrication. We will provide you with a quote in advance. Dental crowns are not covered by basic health insurance in Switzerland.
